Padmarajan has written some of Malayalam's most gripping romantic classics and thrillers, and his rich characterisation and stunning dramas have always wowed fans and colleagues alike. It's not shocking that a biography of the late director moves erudite actor-writer-director Anoop Menon.
“To me, this is probably the best memoir written in Malayalam by a son about his legendary father,” the Ente Mezhuthiri Athazhangal writer wrote on social media about Padmarajan's son Anandapadmanabhan's novel. This is, without a doubt, the most tragic and, at the same time, the most engrossing biography ever written in our literature. His omnipotent artistic highs, his fragile worlds, his magical overtures of love and caring, his erratic detours, the unhinged naughtiness... all of these are brought to life in this landmark piece. Dear Pappan, you not only make your father proud, but you also validate the faith and loyalty that millions of his followers, like myself, have put in him. “I really like you.” King Fish and Padma are two of Anoop's upcoming directorial efforts.
Padmarajan, who died in 1991 at the age of 45, was a maverick whose commercial and critical successes include Namukku Parkkan Munthiri Thoppukal, Moonaam Pakkam, Thoovanathumbikal, and Njan Gandharvan. For some of his scripts, the prolific writer and producer had won the State Award for screenplay and direction.
